John and I went to see Avatar tonight. Currently only the 3D version is out (I have no idea if there's plans for a non-3D release). All I have to say is:
Wow.
Visually, it's absolutely stunning. I think it would still be amazing without the 3D aspect, too. As with all 3D films, there's a few gratuitous "throw things at the audience" moments, but for the most part the 3D is used more subtly to enhance the film, rather than being two+ hours of "what else can we toss at them?" like all too many films.
Story-wise, it's also stunning. There are definitely not-at-all-subtle "corporations are evil live in harmony with the world" messages, but they are woven tightly into a compelling and rich storyline, rather than beating you over the head repeatedly with The Moral Of The Story.
Definitely worth seeing. Definitely worth the extra price of a 3D ticket. I liked it enough that I would even drop another $14 to see it again in the theater before we buy it when it comes out on Blu-Ray.
