A-bloody-men. The whole reason we aren't a democracy (contrary to what some folk would have you believe) is that in a true democracy, the mob rules. Supposedly, the legislative and judicial parts of our government are put in place to have cooler heads and therefore protect the rights of the minority when the majority wants to suppress them. Sadly, that so often isn't the case - the people making up those branches are human, too, and the instinct to follow the herd is a strong part of the human psyche.
