amanda_lodden: (more you know)
This afternoon, I was treated to a rant about how it's Obama's fault that all our jobs are going overseas. Despite my attempts to point out that those decisions are made by companies, not governments, my conversation partner assured me that it's all because of the current government and specifically Obama's decision-making.

Now, on the whole, I am inclined to write her off as a crackpot because of some of her other positions, but even a stopped clock is right twice a day. So before I wave my hand dismissively at EVERYTHING she says, I would like my saner anti-Obama friends to weigh in on this. Are there regulations/laws/massive tax code loopholes that I am unaware of that make moving jobs overseas more appealing? (In this case, I'm not talking about things like "we don't have to worry about job safety!" sort of regulations; I am aware that being able to operate sweatshops and pay less than minimum wage makes overseas factories more financially appealing, but I consider those to be indirect reasons to blame the government, rather than direct ones.*) As a secondary question: if you do have examples of regulations/laws/massive tax code loopholes -- were they implemented during the Obama administration? (I will also accept "implemented before Obama but brought up for review during the Obama administration" on the grounds that "It was like that when I got here" is no excuse for noticing that something is broken and then choosing to leave it that way.)

* And, so that we're clear, I consider those particular things to be worth the cost of losing the profits from companies willing to exploit workers to that degree. It's footnoted because "worth it" is not relevant to the question I'm asking, but it's included because I don't want to get into a sideline debate about whether we SHOULD care about worker safety.
