Child's Play
May. 9th, 2008 08:30 pmJohn will be turning 40 in a few months. Since we have an annual birthday party, I feel a need to do something extra-special for his birthday this year.
I've never liked the whole Over The Hill thing, though. I did one for my Mom when she turned 50, but that was only because she was actively disappointed that no one did one for her 40th birthday. Even then, I searched out decorations that didn't feature vultures and tombstones, because I have always hated the "one year closer to death" mentality.
After a couple of conversations today about it, I hit upon a party theme that John and I both like better than Over The Hill. This year, John's birthday theme will be "40 years and still a kid". A pinata, a sprinkler to run through, pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey (though I hope to find something more sci-fi-ish, perhaps pin-the-lightsaber-on-the-jedi), balloons, ice cream cake and/or cupcakes (I like both ideas, so we'll probably have both), streamers, etc etc. Maybe a treasure hunt of some sort, too.
If you have anything that would go well with the theme that you'd be willing to let me borrow, please let me know. So far I have a tentative lead on a Twister board and a Slip-N-Slide, both on the condition that the person who owns them can actually find them. I'd love lawn darts and bocce balls and other outdoorsy games, too.
