My hair stylist was recently fired from the salon he worked at. The details of the blow-up that led to his dismissal aren't really any of my business. I'm sure that blame can go to both sides, because it pretty much always can, but here's the thing: I don't care. I like him, and I like his work.
What I don't like is that the salon tried to make it my problem. When I called to make an appointment just after he was let go, they told me he wasn't there anymore but refused to tell me where he was now. When I finally tracked him down, I learned that other clients got similar responses. I know that the old salon knows where he is now, because that's how I finally found him... I gave in and went in to get my bangs cut, and while the stylist cutting my bangs demurred when I asked, as soon as the owner was out of earshot she leaned down and whispered "He's at [new salon]."
The thing is... the bang-cutting stylist was nice. I still like my stylist better, but in a pinch (say, when my stylist is on vacation, or having a family emergency, or whatever) I might have gone to her as a backup. Except that I refuse to go to the old salon anymore. Not because of what transpired between my stylist and the salon owner, but because the salon owner turned it into something that inconvenienced me. That tells me in no uncertain terms that the salon owner has no respect for my time and energy. I've no desire to financially support a business that has no respect for me.
Along the same theme, Redbox keeps sending me emails with my rental receipts. The problem with that? I've never used Redbox. I'd considered it a few times, until the emails started coming. I've emailed Redbox customer service, explaining that I've never used their service and I'd really like the emails to stop, which made the emails stop for about a week before resuming.
I get that Redbox doesn't have any control over what their customers put in as an email address. What irritates me is that none of the emails from Redbox have been "verify this email address" emails-- they've gone straight to the "here's your receipt". If it's so important to send an email, isn't it equally important to make sure you're sending it to the right place? And if the information you're sending isn't important enough to verify the recipient, then it's not important enough to send in the first place. (I've checked Redbox's website, and you can't unsubscribe from receipts, either, which is probably why people are giving fake email addresses to begin with.)
In the meantime, I've had to resort to putting in a filter for all Redbox emails, to delete them sight unseen, which means that if I ever do decide to use Redbox for a rental, I'll never get their Very Important Email. Not that it matters that much, because what Redbox has done by not verifying email addresses is tell me that my time and energy isn't important to them, which means I'll never use their service.
