The power outage is causing more of a problem than previously expected. We have two nameservers; one is at the office and one is at the house. Normally this is sufficient to provide DNS answers. Obviously, the one at the house is offline right now. Today, the nameserver at the office refuses to acknowledge that it knows anything about any domains, and swears it was out with friends all night, honest officer, with witnesses who will swear to it and everything!
So mail is hosed, because people can't figure out what mailserver to send to, because they can't get an MX record. Worse, our internal folks can't get to our internal network, because the two not-responding nameservers just happen to be the ones listed at our domain registrar, too, and the working DNS servers around us keep wanting to check for real answers upstream. Which, of course, they can't get. So my employees can go anywhere they like on the Internet, as long as they don't try to do any real work or anything.
I'd ask if I can go home now, but at least the office has air conditioning. And power. Online games, here I come!

Date: 2008-06-09 07:48 pm (UTC)And is still out as well. Detroit Edison doesnt even have an estimate as to how long its going to be. Waterford schools were closed today and it looks like they probably will be tomorrow. My neighbor has a natural gas generator which powers his house so he let us use a plug and we have our fridge and a light running off it.
I actually like this stuff... I mean we get so spoiled on a daily basis, these kinds of events help us to appreciate what we take for granted. :)
