A few weeks ago, CJ and I headed off to Minneapolis for AmberCon Central. I was on the fence about going, since I had a million things that need to be done at home, I didn't feel like I had the energy to devote to roleplaying, and with the way Ambercons are structured I always feel bad if I don't run at least one game-- which I *definitely* did not have the time and energy to do. But we both wanted to support the fledgling Central version, and we both wanted to get a chance to game with a couple people at Central that we don't really game with at US or NW. So we went.
Holy cow, am I glad I did. Central is much smaller than US and NW, which leads to a much more intimate con. I feel like I got to know the people at the convention much better than most of the people at US/NW, simply because there was a lot less chance of "ships passing in the night" syndrome. When the entire con can go to lunch and dinner together and only make the servers mildly annoyed... you get to know everyone.
Plus, the "main GM"* at Central is someone that I've passed in the hallways at ACUS but never actually gamed with. I had 5 games with him at Central, 4 of which he GM'd... and I really like his GM'ing style. The fifth game, he played Doctor Who to my River Song, and I like his playstyle as well. (Minor bit of confusion at first, though-- he's newly married, and when I asked him out of character where he was with our relationship, he pointed out his wedding ring. I took it as an out-of-character answer indicating that he wasn't really comfortable flirting heavily. He meant it as an in-character answer-- his Doctor was much further along the timeline than my River. It worked out.)
* I feel weird using the phrase "main GM" because it implies that no one else GMd a lot, which isn't true. But the arrangement he has with the other "main GM" who started ACCentral is to GM all but one or two slots, which does put him at the top of the GM-All-Star heap.
