Today John turns The Answer To The Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything* for a year.

He took the day off work and wanted to do "something different" today, so we ended up at the DIA. I haven't been there in probably a decade, and I'd forgotten just how cool some of it is. I'd also forgotten that Detroit is a college town-- the area around Wayne State had the usual assortment of "quick and cheap food, much of it ethnic" and bookstores and such that I normally associate with Ann Arbor or Mount Pleasant (and to a lesser degree, Rochester). There was much walking around the museum, and then there was driving around town showing CJ the architecture. We had one moment of "this block is not safe for us to be driving through" but otherwise managed to stick to the safe areas. I'm pleased to see that the nice areas of Detroit are getting even nicer; there's been a lot of planting and maintenance and general improvements throughout the area. Except that block with razor wire on the roof. The areas that haven't been improved really haven't been improved.

On the way home, I-75 was starting to back up, so we took Woodward up. We'd been talking about a steak&barbeque place up in Clarkston, but just as we were entering Ferndale John said "Hey, what about Ethiopian?" and we ended up having a very nummy dinner at Blue Nile on 9 Mile. The only sad part was that they were out of sherbert for dessert, and we had all gotten our hearts set on it. That worked out in the end, as we had to go up to Oakland Township to pick up our farm share, which took us through Rochester. So we stopped at the gelato place at Walton and Livernois and had dessert there, which had the added benefit of giving dinner time to settle.

Now we are back home, where the pool and the hot tub and perhaps a DVD await.

* For the non-geeks: 42. And go read the Hitchiker's Guide series. Now.
