Earlier, I
posted a score and a link to a "How Girly Are You?" quiz. Much before that, I wrote about how
I'm not very feminine.
As I get older I'm getting more "feminine". I'm also getting more "masculine". I keep running into more things that I'm interested in, and the older I get, the less I think about which gender-cliche those things are attached to. I found that I like to cook, as long as I'm not forced to do it Right Now Because We're Hungry. I found that chainsaws aren't so complicated to operate, and that gardening is easier if you let it involve power tools. I found that plucking my eyebrows isn't as painful as it used to be (once I got better tweezers, and realized that a good portion of my aversion comes from having stitches removed from my eyebrow when I was five, during which the doctor plucked out half of my eyebrow by mistake, thinking the hairs were the stitch he was trying to remove).
Some of the questions on the girly quiz, I got only by a technicality-- for example, the "You often will wear more than one outfit in a day, if the mood strikes" question. Often the mood that strikes is "Hey, it's beautiful out, I'm going to go play in the garden". Then I put clean clothes on after I shower. I also did ballet as a little girl, but dumped it as soon as I took my first tap class. If I took the girly quiz and answered based on intent rather than strict interpretation of the question, I get a 20% instead of a 36%. And I'm working on the athletic thing, so my score is likely to drop (though I've been considering maybe getting manicures to help my cuticles heal and maybe stop the skin on one finger from splitting open every fucking winter, which would bring that score back up).
And yet, I'm probably more "feminine" now than I have been since I was six and dressing up as a princess. (Though when I played dress-up I was just as likely to be the knight in shining armor as I was to be the princess, so maybe that's not a good example.) I've made a concerted effort to wear jewelry and/or makeup once in a while, even if it's not a special occasion. I own more than one dress that fits. I've actively been looking for clothing that fits and flatters and does not have snarky comments printed across the front, and sometimes I even wear it.
