I have had A Plan(tm) for our uber-office (you know, the one that we move into when we've grown a bit more in people and a lot more in profit) ever since John dragged me off to a sales meeting a few years ago so that he could make me drive the 2.5 hours to the client's location-- they were a builder, family-owned for many generations, and had far too much money and man-hours available when it came to building their headquarters. It was a squarish building with office areas around the outside, and the center was a gorgeous three-story atrium with a ceiling that was one big skylight and a bunch of trees and plants and a pond that wrapped around three walls with koi in it and a cute wooden bridge out to the lobby.

John grimaces every time I bring this up, because I think that in hindsight he would have rather driven himself and spared himself the expense of my dream office. But come on, wouldn't you agree that it would be just awesome to work in such a building, especially if you had one of the interior offices that had a big window looking out into the atrium?

During a discussion at lunch, I have a New Plan(tm) for the uber-office. Every office should have a La-Z-Boy chair in it, and one of those big multi-screen flat-panel monitors mounted on the wall. Add a wireless keyboard and mouse, a small end-table-like command console for the phone and such (and a headset for everyone so you don't have to juggle the phone handset when you're on it), and you've got everything necessary to do 95% of most of our jobs. I'll still have to work in something for me to deal with the papers that I shuffle, but I think a well-designed end-table-like thing on the other side would do the trick nicely, don't you?

And if the offices are properly designed, you should just be able to glance over to the side a bit for a lovely view of the three-story atrium...
